Tech spotlight: Chatbots
There is a lot of talk between tech heavyweights Mark Zuckerberg and Elon Musk about the future of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and ways it can improve our quality of life.
One technology that regularly pops up in the AI conversation is chatbots. In this update, we break down chatbots and some of the exciting and innovative ways they are being used.
What are chatbots?
A chatbot is a computer program, which you can interact with for a variety of services. These programs use AI and machine learning to convincingly simulate real human conversations.
How can chatbots be used?
Chances are, you’ve already had some interaction with chatbots. Ever used Siri on your apple device, or Google Now on your Android? These virtual assistants are examples of chatbots, and advanced ones at that. They are programmed to understand natural language, different accents and can learn your preferences so they present the most relevant information for you.
Ever visited Jetstar’s website? You may have noticed a chat interface pop-up with Jess, their virtual assistant, asking you if you need help.
These are just a couple of examples and the possibilities for utilising chatbots is very exciting.
How could chatbots help CDU?
Chatbots could change the way you search for information on the web. What makes this better than a traditional search function is that you will have the option to confirm if this information is useful – if not, the chatbot could clarify and retrieve information that is useful. It’s this process that builds the AI of the chatbot, so the next time someone asks the same question you asked, it will remember to retrieve the information you said was useful.
